Safer Recruitment Policy

Purpose

PHB is committed to recruiting people who are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk, and to deterring and identifying those who are not.

Recruitment process

• Roles are defined in writing, including the level of contact with participants.
• Applicants provide their history of relevant work and any gaps are explored.
• Interviews include questions on safeguarding, boundaries and motivation to work with young people.
• References are sought and verified before delivery begins.
• Identity and right-to-work documents are checked.

Criminal record checks

PHB requires the level of criminal record check appropriate to the role and the regulated activity being undertaken. Details of PHB's current DBS arrangements, including check levels held and renewal cycle: 1-3 years. No claim is made on this website about checks that have not been confirmed.

Induction and probation

• All new coaches and staff receive an induction covering safeguarding, reporting routes, conduct and health and safety.
• New staff are supervised and observed during an initial period of delivery.
• Record of completed inductions.

Training

Relevant staff and coaches receive safeguarding training appropriate to their role. PHB does not publish qualifications or certificates that have not been verified.

Ongoing suitability

Staff and coaches are required to disclose any change in circumstances that may affect their suitability. Concerns about suitability are managed under the safeguarding policy, including referral to relevant safeguarding authorities where appropriate.

Review and contact

This document is reviewed at least annually, or sooner following an incident, a change in legislation, or a change in PHB's delivery. Date of last review: 7th Sep 2026. Date of next review: 7th Sep 2027.
